Hello fellow Physicians in training. I’m Daniel and I will be one of the class reps for the 3rd semester students this Summer term. Some facts about me are that I’m from Kitchener, ON, and have never spent more than 3 weeks at a time away from home until I came to Saba. I am also always down to chat about what’s happening in life and the world altogether and so if you need someone to chat to, I’m all ears! A fun fact about me is that I’d like to think myself as having a pretty chill personality and don’t get too stressed thank God, however…. I did find my first white hair while flying back home after IDR shelf in the airplane washroom. Talk about improving the health of others at the expense of our own, eh?

Fall 2021 SGA Officers and Representatives

SUSOM's SGA is currently comprised of the following positions, held by the students below:

President:

Matthew Stearns

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

In serving as President, I have the distinct privilege and honor of leading the Student Government Association, and through it, the student body, this semester. This marks my fourth semester on the SGA, having previously served as a Class Representative and as Mentor Program Coordinator. In my current role, it will be my purpose to work together with the SGA to help strengthen the student community at Saba University; to help empower the students here to a greater level of success through our coordinated efforts. We have an unprecedented opportunity before us to rebuild and reshape this community, which has been strained and tested by the rigors of this pandemic. I know that not only as individuals, but also as an institution, we have a tremendous amount of potential, and I am here to do my part in converting that potential into the kinetic.

Before starting medical school at Saba University, I lived in my native New Hampshire, USA. I enjoyed many activities including hiking all of the forty-eight peaks above 4,000 feet of elevation in the state, as well as bicycling, cooking, and watching classic films. Since moving to Saba I have become an avid, amateur scuba diver, enjoying the vast amount of diving available on Saba’s protected reefs. I look forward to a career in medicine, most likely in a surgical specialty.

I have a passion for mentorship and will gladly meet with students to help provide any words of guidance and lessons learned from my experience. I look forward to a promising and fruitful semester working with my fellow students.

You can usually find me in the library and am more than happy to answer any questions that you would have.

Hi! My name is Sarah Nikole Blackwell and I am a fourth semester (a.k.a. the fun semester) class rep.
I was born in Alabama but spent the majority of my life growing up in the Florida Keys
and consider them to be my home. I attended the University of Alabama for undergrad,
where I got my Bachelor's of Science in Biology. And yes, I do think my football team is better than yours.
My hobbies include mispronouncing words on purpose, misspelling at least one word in every txet, and typing
LOLOL when really I just breathed a little harder than normal out of my nose. I am well versed in many
aspects of the internet and can potentially quote more vines than you can. My natural habitat is laying on
top of a table in the fishbowl during breaks. I am excited to be a part of the SGA and to help voice my
classes concerns! (:

I am a certified phlebotomist (PBT-ASCP), but also performed some processing and testing in the lab, as well as administrative and support tasks for the lab management team. While pursuing my undergraduate degree I also completed programs and was registered with the NREMT as an intermediate level emergency medical technician, although I never actually practiced. I continued on to Armstrong State University where I obtained my Masters in Public Health. In my free time I like to read, cook, and clean. Vineeth Mohan

Hey, my name is Vineeth G. Mohan. I graduated from UC Berkeley in Fall 2016 with a B.A. in Integrative Biology: Human Biology and Health Sciences. I was born and raised in Fresno, CA and my family hails from Kerala, India. I was also the 1st semester class rep last semester.
I love communicating, especially through the medium of film, where I've won several national and state awards. I've been able to edit, write, direct, narrate, and animate with companies such as Toyota, Discovery, and PBS. I've also done public relations work with nonprofits such as the California Department of Education, California Department of Transportation, and the Central California Society of India. I hope to combine my experience communicating through film with my passion for helping out fellow second semester students—with whom I've been able to foster close relationships with over the last semester—and continue to create win-win scenarios for everyone.

4th Semester Class Reps:

Wajehe Najafi

My name is Wajehe Najafi. I am originally from Afghanistan, and have been living in Russia, Germany, Iran and now living in Canada, which means that most of education has been done in all different languages in different countries around the world. After all the travelling, I achieved a Bachelor of Science degree, with a major in health science and minor in chemistry. My hobbies include reading, playing piano, and riding horses. Of course, I have done lots of school-related research, as many of students do. It was a long journey with lots of ups and downs to make it finally to medical school but here I am now, and am very excited to be part of the SGA and work with school and all students.

Matt Nagelschmidt

I am from Pittsfield, Massachusetts. I graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2013 with Bachelor of Science in Engineering Degree in Biomedical Engineering. I completed my Master's degree, also from UCONN, in the same discipline with a focus on Biomaterials. My Master's project was a collaboration with Covidien Surgical Solutions (now Medtronic). The project, titled Evaluation and Feasibility of a Biodegradable Magnesium Staple, focused on the use of a magnesium alloys in GIT and GYN procedures because of their better strength and degradation profiles (when compared to the industry standard titanium). I also worked as an intern at Medtronic, on a team developing many novel technologies to be used in surgical practices. I started at SUSOM in May 2016, and have served as a teaching assistance in both the anatomy and histology courses. I have also been an active member in both the surgical and global health and medicine clubs. I look forward to serving as the 4th semester class representative, and am eager to help with any needs of the class.

Devon Tribble

Hi my name is Devon Tribble and I am from Ontario, Canada. I completed my Honours Bachelor of Science joint major in Biology and Psychology at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. I was voluntold back into this position by my fellow classmates, I think just because I’m very organized and they enjoy my regular Facebook reminders and the fact that I usually know the answers as opposed to them looking for them themselves. As a 5th semester student I am looking forward to working with the rest of the SGA members as quickly and efficiently as possible to ensure that what needs to be done gets done, and that time is not wasted on trivial matters. Dr. Huckfeldt is THRILLED to have me back, because he feels like our computer age doesn’t allow him to practice his penmanship much and with my endless demands and complaints at SGA meetings he’ll have the best handwriting on campus before I’m gone…or he’ll need a new notebook because I’ll use up all the pages. You’re welcome!!!! I am always open for suggestions and comments to help ensure that SUSOM is a student centered and respectful campus. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to stop me on campus or send me a message.

The position of VP Internal has been likened to the role of Olivia Pope. While not the right hand of strength and power. The VP Internal is the Left Hand of the Presidency. Operating behind the scenes. Maintaining order among the professors, students, locals. It is the responsibility of VP:I to ensure, by any means necessary, order and peace reign in the SUSOM SGA. I feel that my whole life has been preparing me for such a role. To act in the shadows, ensuring the agenda succeeds. This is my pledge, I will maintain order and facilitate peace by any means necessary.

Prior to coming to Saba, I worked as an ED scribe for two years where, again, I typed away to my heart’s content. Now, as SGA Secretary, I’m looking forward to typing out all the great plans my colleagues have for this campus. Hit me up for all your typing needs. See y’all around!
